When Did Avenged Sevenfold Become Headliners?

The promoters of ROTR announced the lineup of their new one day festival in Carolina today, Carolina Rebellion, and the lineup is as follows: Avenged Sevenfold, Godsmack, Stone Sour, Three Days Grace, Alter Bridge, Seether, Bullet For My Valentine, Theory of a Deadman, Hinder, Skillet, Halestorm, Saving Abel, My Darkest Days, Black Stone Cherry, Cavo, Rev Theory, Pop Evil and Art of Dying. The lineup isn't that different from ROTR or any number of smaller radio station festivals across the US, but it made me wonder, "When did AX7 become a headlining act?"

Looking around at other Rock Festival, Avenged Sevenfold is headlining over other major rock bands like Three Days Grace, Disturbed, Korn, Godsmack? This strikes me as odd especially when just this past summer AX7 was supporting Disturbed on the Uproar Tour. Now the band is suddenly topping bands who have been around longer, have more hit songs, and have sold more albums. Was there suddenly a surge in AX7's popularity? I know they got a lot of headlines after their drummer died, and even more when Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy joined the fold (has since left). Has this name recognition boosted their status in the rock touring world? I dunno, but it feels weird to me that their headlining ROTR and so many other festivals this summer.

What do you think?

  1. i have been wondering the same thing but now every festival that comes out other than rocklahoma cause its a differnt format has had these guys headlining. i have seen them live and they are ok and sometimes horrible. is their new hit on the radio so big that they are now he biggest band in America. i guess the answer is yes for AEG and right arm entertainment. thank god for lollapalooza putting together what looks to be a sick lineup an that's only knowing three preformers
