As discussed on this blog previously, newly reunited Soundgarden are rumored to be one of the headliners at this year's Rock on the Range. Since officially getting the band back together over the summer, the Seattle grunge boys have been slowly crafting their return. They played a couple club gigs, headlined Lollaplooza, played an episode of Conan, released a new single 'Black Rain', a new greatest hits album, and recently announced the upcoming release of a new live album recorded in 1996. They've really been taking baby steps with this whole reunion thing, with no real commitment to a full tour or new music.
Chris Cornell announced today that he would be going on a US tour this spring, but not with Soundgarden. Instead it will be Cornell's first ever solo acoustic tour starting on April 1 in Austion, TX. While it would be doubt be cool to see Cornell in an intimate setting running through his songbook of hits, this is a real blow to hard rock fans hoping to see Soundgarden roar to life across the country.
So what does this mean for Soundgarden playing ROTR in May? Well, the solo tour currently is scheduled to run through twenty-five cities and end in San Diego on May 6th. With no dates conflicting with ROTR (no Ohio date on the tour), this tour really doesn't hurt Soundgaren's possibility for playing Columbus and may actually get Cornell's voice warmed and ready for a full rock show. My fingers are still crossed for Soundgarden, but as always we'll just have to wait and see.
