The Chosen Few:
Alice Cooper, Neil Diamond, Dr. John, Darlene Love, Tom Waits
Hall of Shame Class of 2011 |
Sorry Bon Jovi, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Donovan, Donna Summer, J. Geils Band, Chic, Joe Tex, and Laura Nyro, Hall voters have dubbed thee unworthy of joining Ohio's magic glass pyramid. With so many nominees this year (15, last year there were only 12 nominees), I hoped six might get in, but the Hall is sticking with good ole number 5. Oh well, this year's inductees are a colorful group of artist and all of them are very deserving of recognition. One of them certainly has no Rock and Roll credentials, and another's case is at least questionable. Doesn't matter though, anyone that knows anything about the Hall, knows it has little to do with actual Rock and Roll.
For Muse-Zach's part, we got 3/5 correct thinking Cooper, Diamond, Waits, Bon Jovi, and Donna Summer would get in. Kind of surprised that Donna Summer didn't get in. As big as Bon Jovi is, I should have realized the Hall's snob votes wouldn't let a hair metal band in without years of complaining. For fun let's look at how long each of these artist had to wait to get into the Hall after reaching they only real criteria for being in the Hall; being around the music biz for 25 years.
Alice Cooper- Eligible for the 1995 Hall Class 16 year wait
Neil Diamond- Eligible for the 1989 Hall Class 22 year wait
Tom Waits- Eligible for the 1999 Hall Class 12 year wait
Dr. John- Eligible for the 1994 Hall Class 17 year wait
Darlene Love- Eligible for the 1989 Hall Class 22 year wait
Wow, looks like Jon Bovi might have to wait a decade or so to get in. I find it interesting that as deserving as each of the artist inducted this year is, only Darlene Love has been nominated for induction before (she was also nominated for the 1999 and 2010 Hall Classes). Weird.
